The size of the system will vary according to your requirements versus your budget. The entry level system is 1 kW. In Queensland this system will produce approximately 5 kWh per day on average. Solar electric panels generate electricity using what’s called “the photovoltaic effect” (PV) and convert light into electricity. This electricity is fed into a ‘box on the wall’ , known as an inverter which “conditions” the power for use by the everyday appliances we all use. This power is then passed through a meter to measure its volume and then fed directly into the power grid.
When your panels produce electricity it is fed straight back into the power grid just like a mini power station.
The power you produce is available for all consumers to use, as well as you. This is called a “grid-tied” system – tied to the power grid.
If you use less power than what your solar panels generate - you get a credit from your power company for this excess electricity.
A grid-tied system is not independent of the normal power supply , so if there is a power interruption in your neighbourhood , your system will automatically shut down and cease supplying power to the grid for safety reasons
